January Performance

Just a quick note on performance in January.

We used 2172 kWh from the grid, and only produced 110kWh.  So, the balance for the month is 2062kWh.

This compares to a modeled consumption of 1298 kWh.   A very long way off  the predicted performance, with a delta of 764kWh.  We need to do some more analysis of this, but in general this January was warmer than typical, with a lot of ice.  The solar panels and even the evacuated tubes had a lot of ice build up, which eliminated PV production and slowed heat production for many days in the month.  Still though, we are consuming more than we modeled.  The house wants it to be cold and sunny, not mild and cloudy – that is for sure.

We have some sub-metering data to help us understand where this is, but it is not perfect.  The lights, plug loads, and appliance are modeled at 12.8 kwh/day.  It appears we are using twice that amount at 24.4kWh/day.  Not sure why yet, but we will continue to look into it.

On the HVAC side, we used 45.6kWh/day compared to the model of 29.06..  This is for HRV, pumps for radiant, and resistance space heating back-up, and DHW.

On the financial side, the house cost us $76.01 in electricity for the month when you net production against consumption.  You have got to love the FIT program from that perspective.
